Fun fact for anyone interested: While 1/8192 maybe the probability, it's not saying that after 8192 rolls one is guaranteed to be shiny. To find the probability that none of them are, you would do 8191/8192 (The chance of any individual roll NOT being a shiny) and raise it to the power of however many rolls you want to calculate the probability of. In our case, it's 8192. This would give you 0.3678569865. Or, after 8192 attempts, there's a 36.786% chance that NONE of the pokemon you encountered will be shiny. As the amount of rolls you do approach infinity, your chance will approach 100%. It's true for every random chance, no matter what it is. Even it's possible to have a coin flip land heads 100 times in a row, despite having a 1 in 2 chance of getting it, but as you flip it more and more times, the chance it will eventually land heads increases.

When I played pokemon crystal when it came out I remember walking through one of the first caves and finding a shiny Geodude on the first encounter. When Ruby/sapphire came out I used rock smash on those boulders blocking you from the sand area and got a shine geodude again. I thought it was guaranteed people would find those when I was younger.

A friend and I built a script to soft reset a gen 3 emulator and ended up with a ton of cool data. A lot of pokemon were actually close to the 8000, but sometimes we got lucky. 2 of our regi's were in the 200 to 400 range, while rayquaza was closer to 50 thousand.

Though I'm not a streamer, my luckiest shiny happened during a shiny badge quest race between me and two friends in alpha sapphire. I had just beaten Wattson, and decided to do a gulpin hunt through dexnav. I had done the same thing with lotad at the beginning of the journey, which took a few days, putting me well behind. I expected this to be another really long hunt, but after i knocked out two gulpin, the third shined. I know I'll never be that lucky again, but the three encounter gulpin will forever live in infamy in my friend group!

By the way, you reach 50/50 odds at 5678 attempts. (Easy to remember number!) So if you take more than 5678 attempts for a single shiny, you are officially unlucky (though possibly only slightly).

i've seen this aspect of unluckiness captured a lot in runescape actually. somebody went over 10 times the drop rate for an item from an npc, which to my understanding, would be like that man going more than 81,920 encounters without a shiny registeel. somebody else also went so dry on an item, that the developers checked the code to see if it was bugged, and it was!

This is crazy fr when I was a kid I sat down on and told my brother I was gonna catch 8000 sableyes to get a shiny one on Christmas day, got 26 in and caught a shiny Aaron, and it became my favorite pokemon instantly

My luckiest hunt was Ralts (1/512 chance) that I got on my 3rd try. It was my second shiny ever. My first one was Charmander (same odds) that I got after 27 tries. At that point I thought shiny hunting was eeeeeasy. So the game threw me a shiny Drampa (same odds) after 1092 tries. Just to show that I should have been more humble lol

I was just doing a casual playthrough off Pokemon XY and I got 2 crits in a row on tackle. crit is a 6.25% chance of happening, it happened twice so it's 6.25%•6.25% or 0.0625•0.0625=0.00390625 to percentage it's 0.390625% or 0.4% (1/250) now this isn't even the start at the forest I encounter a shiny and I don't have any Pokeballs as I used all of it on a ralts so I just tried to kill it, I missed tackle thrice! (tackle has a 1/20 chance of missing) and here's how the math works 1^3/20^3 1•1•1=1, 20•20•20=8,000 that was a fucking 1/8,000 chance of happening and in XY it's a 1/4096 chance of encountering so on top of the 1/8000 of missing 3 tackles consecutively there's a shiny that's a 1/4096 chance. I hate my life! why didn't this luck happen when I was trying to make a living dex of shiny Mons in frlg?!

I think my unluckiest hunt was Applin in Scarlet, took about 5 sandwiches (via resetting). I've not really tried shiny hunting in any other game tbh

I was casually resetting my English Emerald save to try and get a cool Trainer ID, and got 12345. Felt really generic, but when I realized it was a 1/65536 chance I kept it. Super lucky!

I have gotten two wild shinies in my life. I got a shiny Tentacool when playing Pokemon Pearl: the first game I had as a kid. I hit it naturally. Considering I caught it at lvl 27, I prob caught early-mid game so prob 40ish pokemon encounters in. I aslo SOS'd for a shiny Sandyghast in Pokemon Sun.

The luckiest thing that happened to me in Pokémon is either getting the Pokérus naturally in Pokémon Y or the "full odds" shiny Sylveon from the overworld terra Sylveon in Scarlet.

My luckiest moment is definitely that time I was searching for that 1% bagon in route 1 of Sun and Moon, and, before I even found it, I got 2 shiny Pokemon in under 100 encounters! A shiny comfey and a shiny alola rattata! Absolutely insane! Like... I wasn't even shiny hunting, I just wanted to get that 1% bagon. And I got two shiny Pokemon before that little dragon even appeared! Lmao It was in my casual playthrough of the game so I dont have the video evidence, but I still have the 2 shinies in my copy. I love how at the end he said that hobbiests are more likely to give up than not get a shiny at 20,000. In my case, while I respect it, active shiny hunting doesn't appeal to me long enough to go 1,000 attempts without automating it.

Although it's not on video, and probably not the absolute luckiest since it happened in Pokemon Shield rather than an older game, I once got a shiny psyduck on my second encounter. I was couldn't decide whether to be happy or annoyed since it was meant to be a break/change of scenery from my main hunt of my favourite pokemon that just had reached 5000 encounters.
